    Standard definition

    What is the VSME?

    The VSME, a European standard
    designed for SMEs

The VSME standard was developed by EFRAG at the request of the European Commission to enable SMEs to produce reliable ESG data that can be used by their stakeholders, within a simple, voluntary framework aligned with CSRD logic. It builds on the structuring principles of the European sustainability reporting framework from the CSRD's ESRS, in a proportionate format adapted to the operational capacities of SMEs.

The VSME responds to the Omnibus directive, which postponed and simplified CSRD-related obligations for smaller companies while reinforcing the importance of voluntary initiatives.

A framework adapted to ground realities

    Voluntary

Designed for companies wishing to formalise their ESG approach without being obligated to do so, the VSME offers a voluntary, clear approach adapted to their capabilities.

    Harmonised

The VSME provides a lighter framework based on a standard recognised by stakeholders, thereby limiting the proliferation of non-harmonised ESG requests.

    Universal

Initially designed for SMEs, the VSME can be used by any organisation not subject to the CSRD, regardless of its sector or size.

    Two progressive modules

To reflect the diversity of ESG maturity levels within SMEs,
the VSME framework is built around two progressive modules, allowing each company to move forward
step by step in structuring its ESG strategy and disclosures.

    Basic

This module focuses on the main environmental, social and governance indicators, in order to lay solid foundations for your future reporting. It is particularly suited to SMEs starting their ESG journey or wishing to respond to their first requests from clients or investors.

    Comprehensive

This module integrates policies, targets and transition plans, offering a complete view of your company's ESG performance and commitments. It meets the expectations of banks, investors and large clients, while preparing you for any future alignment with the CSRD.
