What Is ESG Recognition for SMEs?
ESG recognition for SMEs is an external, structured acknowledgement that your business manages its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) responsibilities at a defined level of maturity.
It's not a self-declaration. It's not a marketing sticker. It's a verified credential, issued after an independent audit, that tells banks, customers, investors, and future employees exactly where your business stands on sustainability.
For most SMEs, ESG has felt like something designed for large listed companies: complex, expensive, and full of acronyms. That's changing fast.
The EFRAG VSME standard, recommended by the European Commission on 30 July 2025, is the EU's voluntary sustainability reporting framework for non-listed SMEs. VSME Medals translates that standard into a practical recognition system: you complete an assessment with the support of an accredited partner, your dossier is independently audited, and you earn a medal that reflects your real ESG maturity level.
ESG recognition is not the same as ESG reporting. Reporting produces a document. Recognition produces a credential, something you can display, share with stakeholders, and build on year after year.
Why ESG Recognition Matters for Your Business
The business case is concrete. Here's what ESG recognition for SMEs actually unlocks.
Access to finance
Banks and investors increasingly screen for ESG performance before approving loans or funding. A VSME Medal, based on the framework the EU itself has defined for SMEs, gives lenders a structured, comparable data point, not a vague claim. A growing number of European financial institutions already reference the VSME framework in their SME lending criteria.
Supply chain eligibility
Large companies subject to CSRD must report on their value chains, which means they need ESG data from their suppliers, you. An SME with an audited VSME Medal is far easier to keep in the supply chain than one with nothing to show. Losing a major client over missing ESG documentation is a real risk today.
Talent attraction and retention
Employees, especially under 35, choose employers based on values, not just salary. Credible ESG recognition signals that your small business takes environmental and social responsibility seriously. It's a recruitment asset and a retention tool.
Competitive edge
ESG recognition helps you stand out, both against competitors who haven't formalised their position, and as a credible leader within your own sector. A recognised, EU-aligned credential turns a sustainability effort into a visible commercial advantage.
Reduced reporting burden
The VSME standard was specifically designed to reduce the administrative burden on SMEs responding to sustainability data requests. Getting recognised through VSME Medals means you complete the work once, and have a reusable, shareable credential for every future request.
The VSME Medals Recognition System
VSME Medals awards one of four medals based on your assessed ESG maturity level. Each medal corresponds to a defined set of VSME disclosures, from the Basic Module through to the most advanced level.
| Medal | ESG Maturity Level | VSME Coverage | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
Bronze | Foundational | VSME Basic Module (core disclosures) | SMEs starting their ESG journey |
Silver | Developing | VSME Comprehensive Module | SMEs with initial ESG practices in place |
Gold | Advanced | Mid-caps SRS format | SMEs with structured ESG management |
Platinum | Leading | Gold level + sectoral comparative analysis, verified data | SMEs with best-in-class ESG performance |
Every medal is independently audited. You don't self-select your level. Your audited dossier determines it. That's what makes the credential credible to the stakeholders who matter.
The four-level structure also gives you a roadmap. A Bronze medal today is not a ceiling. It's a starting point with a clear path to Silver, Gold, and Platinum as your ESG practices develop.
How It Works
The VSME Medals process is structured around five clear steps. You're not left to do it alone: an accredited partner supports your preparation, and an independent audit gives the result its credibility.
1. Medals questionnaire
You complete a self-assessment questionnaire to position your ESG maturity level. Based on your responses, you receive a shortlist of accredited partners who can support you through the next steps.
2. ESG upskilling
With the support of your accredited partner, you put the right tools and policies in place and collect the data aligned to the requirements of your targeted medal, with tailored guidance throughout.
3. Audit preparation
Your partner helps verify the completeness, consistency, and traceability of the elements you've gathered, and the conformity of the supporting evidence, so your dossier is ready for audit.
4. Independent documentary audit
SMT carries out an independent documentary verification, checking the completeness and consistency of your declared data against the EFRAG modules. At the end, a VSME Medal is awarded, reflecting your real level of commitment.
5. Attribution & certificate
You receive the official VSME Medals certificate and all associated communication materials to showcase your initiative. Your medal is renewed every two years to reflect your ongoing ESG progress. And a renewal at the same level involves a lighter, lower-cost audit.

Who Is It For?
VSME Medals is built for unlisted SMEs operating in Europe that fall outside mandatory CSRD scope. That covers a wide range of businesses:
- Manufacturing companies responding to supply chain ESG requests
- Professional services firms pitching to large corporate clients
- Tech scale-ups seeking impact investment or green finance
- Family businesses wanting to formalise their sustainability practices
- Any SME that has been asked "what's your ESG position?" and didn't have a clear answer
In fact, VSME Medals is specifically designed for the companies that fall outside mandatory CSRD scope, the vast majority of European SMEs.
Pricing
VSME Medals is designed to be accessible on two fronts. Obtaining a medal is straightforward. You complete a questionnaire and attach your supporting evidence, with the support of an accredited partner. And pricing is scaled to the size of your company, not to the medal level you target, so Gold and Platinum remain within reach of any SME, not just the largest.
